Column Internals Overview


Sulzer's big experience in the separation business allows to provide internals for each combination of technology. Transitions from structured packing sections to tray sections, changes between different tray sections or combination of separator-internals are designed for optimized performing columns.

Internals could be designed and delivered for different materials; stainless steel, titanium, several plastics and pure carbon have been provided for many columns. The worldwide implemented standard guarantees the global quality in design and manufacturing of internals.

Column internals are installed on adjusted or on existing column attachments. The requirements are carefully verified and specified for each situation.

Liquid Inlet Systems


Depending on the flow rate an appropriate inlet system is recommended. We have solutions either to feed separation trays or liquid distributors.

Collecting Devices


Liquid collectors including packing support help to save column-height. Optimized design of the collecting troughs reduces pressure head in the collecting-section. Chimney trays are provided to accumulate liquid or to improve vapor distribution below packed beds.

Handling of Flash-Feed


Flash-feed is well separated in its components before it is used for liquid distribution or vapor feed. Every column has different feed conditions which is carefully considered in the design of the flash devices.

Support Devices


Support systems for every different packing type which can be easily installed with a minimum of beams and welding attachments.

Vapor Distribution


The distribution of vapor is not that critical than distribution of liquid. But it is as well a challenge to handle and design it for a correct operation. Our engineers know how to do this correctly with a minimum of installed parts for every kind of application.
