Desulphurization of distillates (sweetening, Merox process)

Desulfurization involves the removal of undesirable sulfur compounds from petroleum distillates – such as LPG or Naphtha – by means of a sodium hydroxide solution containing catalyst.

To this end, the liquids involved must be brought into intimate contact by dispersing and be subsequently separated again. This can be optimally attained with a Sulzer SMV™ Static Mixer where the drop size can be pre-determined. Moreover the drop size distribution is stable and narrow.

Customer advantages

  • High degree of desulfurization
  • Risk of undesirable emulsion is eliminated due to accurate drop size prediction
  • Short installation length
  • Low pressure drop, usually between 0.1 and 0.3 bar resulting in low energy requirements
