Foaming

Foam extrusion and foaming with static mixers in extrusion

Foams modify material properties, improve product quality and yield a number of benefits to processors and consumers. When it comes to foaming polymers and cellular applications, the equipment plays a key role since foaming processes are very sensitive.
Sulzer mixers deliver a polymer melt of highest quality when it comes to blending additives and maintaining uniform temperature distribution. Furthermore, for physical blowing agents the dosing equipment is crucial. OptifoamTM delivers a system solution which can be retrofitted to existing machines with very minor effort.

Physical foaming for Extrusion
A fluid-injection/mixing module is fitted to the extruder without any local modifications necessary. In this module, blowing agent is metered into the melt flow over a maximum surface area to ensure good predistribution of the blowing agent in the polymer material. Such mixture of blowing agent and polymer is further homogenized in the static mixer over sufficient residence time to allow for complete dissolution of the blowing agent.

Foaming with static mixers in Extrusion
Foamed polymers are widely known in extrusion of insulation sheets and packaging applications. Bubble size and temperature distribution are key figures in this process. Therefore Sulzer SMB-R and SMB-H mixers play a major role in these applications due to low shear forces and high homogeneity within the mixer.
The mixer can be installed before and after the polymer cooling unit.
