SMR®
Sulzer Mixer Reactor (SMR) combines efficiently all the advantages of effective mixing and controlled heat transfer.

The SMR reactor consists of a series of specially configured tube bundles which are positioned perpendicularly to each other in order to enhance radial mixing across volume highly packed with heat transfer surface area. Water, steam, thermal oil or other special cooling media can be used as heat transfer fluid. Every single bundle can be designed to feature different mixing and heat transfer effects in order to meet most stringent process needs.

Principle of the SMR

Sulzer Mixer Reactor (SMR)

SMR reactors ranging from 80 to 1600 mm are in operation. Larger units can be designed and fabricated upon request. The length is determined by the process requirements and duty requested. The length can range from 1 m, for a compact heat exchanger, to some 20 m for a full reactor tower. Standard material of construction is SS, but CS is also increasingly considered. Also available are special surface coatings, for example in food applications. A welded mono-block design is common, but a flanged design is also available in cases the process routine requests periodic removal and disposition of bundles.

Customer advantages

  • Excellent plug flow behaviour and narrow residence time
  • Well defined mixing and small reaction volume due to high driving forces for reaction
  • Low shear thus gentle product treatment
  • No hot spots and no dead zones
  • High flexibility with regard to operation
  • Fast product transition and fast change of process conditions
  • Safety and environmental friendliness inherent to the design
  • No rotating parts thus minimal maintenance costs
