Target Contact a gas with a liquid to remove undesirable compounds or dust from the gas.
Static mixers with co-current flow of liquid and gas, followed by a gas-liquid separator, can be used for single stage physical absorptions or for absorptions followed by an instantaneous chemical reaction in the liquid phase. A static mixer provides a large internal surface area on which a liquid injected into a gas flow is spread like a film. Owing to the high turbulence created by the mixer and the high relative velocity between the liquid film and the hot gas, heat and mass transfer are greatly improved.
The main advantages of static mixers are
- Small volume, low cost of equipment (high pressure systems!), thus small space required
- Intensive radial mixing of liquid and gas, thus homogenization of both phases with respect to concentration and temperature
- No flooding possible, thus high gas velocity permitted.
